Angry protesters razed the Ol Kalou Police Station on Wednesday afternoon after police allegedly shot dead a man.

The victim, in his early twenties, was pronounced dead on arrival at J M Kariuki Hospital.

Witnesses claimed that the man was shot in the chest at close range by a police officer.

"We were with him during the peaceful protests when the officer shot him. We immediately rushed him to the hospital, where we learned that he had succumbed to the injuries," said James Macharia.

Macharia said that they ferried the body to the police station, which led the furious protesters to set it (police station) on fire. Fortunately, no suspects in custody were injured in the incident.

By the time of going to press, the body had been removed to the hospital.

Nyandarua County Commissioner Jardesa Abdirisack could not be reached for comment.

In Nyahururu town, two people were hospitalised with gunshot wounds.
