Bungoma County is mourning the death of Chwele–Kabuchai Ward MCA Barasa Mukhongo.

Mukhongo passed away after a prolonged illness while receiving treatment at Hopekin Hospital in Bungoma town on Monday .

Born on August 2, 1956, he was a seasoned politician, known for his dedication to public service and the welfare of constituents.

The MCAs political career spanned decades and he was a loyal member of Ford Kenya party and an advocated for the rights of the people of Kabuchai.

Leaders and residents have lauded Mukhongo’s humility, leadership, and commitment to grassroots development.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka described the MCA as “a true servant of the people” and a political pillar in the region.

Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga eulogised Mukhongo as a fearless leader who “spoke for the voiceless,” while Bungoma County Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Nyongesa said he was a unifier and a guide to many younger MCAs.

Mukhongo was known for championing education, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development.

Residents said the MCA was approachable and proactive, and made impromptu visits to schools, health centers, and markets to assess service delivery.

As a trusted Ford Kenya leader and ally of party boss Moses Wetang’ula, Mukhongo played a key role in the Bongoma county assembly and local politics.

Plans are underway for his funeral, with the county government and Ford Kenya party taking the lead in the arrangements.

A special sitting of the Bungoma County Assembly is also expected in Mukhongo's honor.
