Police in Kakamega have launched investigations following the discovery of a 17-year-old girl’s lifeless body in a rental house in Lurambi in a suspected love triangle.

The horrific incident has sparked shock and grief among residents.

The girl, believed to be a Ugandan national, was found dead on Monday afternoon in a single-room house she reportedly shared with her Ugandan boyfriend, who is now the main suspect.

According to police sources, the suspect fled to Uganda shortly after the incident.

Area residents were first alerted after a group of men claiming to be from Uganda visited the plot’s caretaker around midday on Monday, seeking information about the girl.

“They said they were from Uganda and had been sent to find the girl after her boyfriend allegedly committed suicide,” said the caretaker, who had rented the room to the suspect just a day earlier.

She recalled that on Sunday at around 8:00 pm, a young man approached her in search of a room.

After agreeing on a payment of Sh2,500, she gave him access to the house. She said she did not see the girl at that time.

“Yesterday, around 8 pm, a boy came asking if there was a vacant house to rent. I told him there was one. He left, then came back with Sh2,500. After he paid, I opened the house for him. I never saw any girl,” the caretaker recounted.

She said it wasn’t until Monday afternoon that a group of about five men came to the premises and revealed that the man who had rented the room had returned to Uganda and was reported to have taken his own life.

The group told her they had been sent by the deceased boyfriend’s family to trace his girlfriend, who had gone missing and was feared dead.

Moments later, upon entering the house, the caretaker and the visitors discovered the girl’s body lying lifeless inside.

Police were immediately alerted and arrived at the scene to secure the area and begin investigations.

The girl’s body was moved to the Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

The incident has shocked residents of Lurambi, many of whom expressed concern over the ease with which strangers can rent houses without scrutiny.

Area ligurus have appealed to landlords and caretakers to thoroughly vet new tenants and urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity.

According to Kakamega Central OCPD Vincent Cheruyiot said the death is related to a love triangle, but we are investigating the cause of the matter.

"We are investigating the matter, and we suspect it is a love triangle affair. The suspect is on the run, and the report we have is that the man fled to Uganda, where he is allegedly committed suicide," said Cheruyiot.

He added, "The relationship of the two is well known to their parents, and the girl's parents were looking for her after they were told by the man's parent that he had committed suicide, only for them to get her murdered in a house in Kakamega."

The OCPD said the two have been living in Kenya, especially in Kakamega town, and they are investigating why the girl was killed just a day after they moved into a new house.
