Kakamega County staff to receive half salaries over SHA delays

Half salaries to be paid due to delayed payments from the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The County Government of Kakamega has announced that contracted hospital staff will only receive half of their August 2025 salaries due to delayed payments from the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The directive was communicated in a letter dated August 28, 2025, by senior health officer Hillary Kaverenge to all contracted staff.

“Members regretted that the hospital has not been receiving payments from SHA for the last two months, which has led to a serious cash crisis,” the letter stated in part.

The decision followed a hospital management meeting held on August 27, which also revealed that monthly hospital cash collections had dropped by more than half.

“Based on the above factors, the meeting resolved that if no funding is received from SHA by the end of the month, the accounts office shall pay half of your net salary, with arrears settled once SHA remits funds,” Kaverenge added.

The county government apologized to affected workers, saying the situation was beyond the hospital management’s control.

This development comes amid growing controversy surrounding the SHA, which has faced criticism over delayed remittances to health facilities, allegations of fraud, and operational inefficiencies.
